Carol D. Buddell
About the Artist
French and American artist Carol (Denn)
Buddell
grew up in Yorktown, VA in the states
where she started painting from a young age.
She was influenced by the history and
museums in the area including the Chrysler
Museum.
Carol graduated with a BA in Art
History from the University of Georgia in
2000.
Imagination, symbolism and storytelling
are the main themes in her paintings.

Carol Buddell went on to study in the old
tradition by going to Europe to study art
after doing the Grand Tour.
In Paris Carol
studied figure drawing for three years with the
ADAC studios. While taking art history classes
in French at the Ecole du Louvre, Carol took a
semester of oil painting at the Ecole du Beaux
Arts Paris.  Carol visited Paris museums to
train her eye even more. The artist up to this
point was mostly self taught
which lended her
work to a naive style
.

Carol Buddell is currently enrolled in the
Masters of Fine Art Program painting at
Bath Spa University in the UK.
Carol mostly
works in oil on canvas but embraces a myriad
of techniques in her paintings that
have been
compared to
the 1920's art movement magical
realism. Her paintings capture the unique
personality of each subject in painterly
portraits with loose brushstrokes. Often
references to the sitters interests are included
in the backgrounds and clothing of the subject.
The contrast between the realist portrait or
subject and the fantastical or magic reference
to the subjects interests and the way the artist
plays with composition and space
are all
elements in the art of
magic realism. Her work
embraces a narrative and contrast between
the hand painted quality of the portrait and the
mechanical process of print, collage and mixed
media.

Carol Buddell is influenced by the
movements in art history: Surrealism, Magic
Realism, American Impressionism and Folk art,
Japanese prints, artists: M.C. Escher, Rene
Magritte, and portrait artists namely: John
Singer Sargent, Klimt, Monet, Banksy, Currin,
Warhol and many others.

Carol Buddell's style has always been called
painterly, whether working on portraits, or in
previous years painting series of Seascapes,
Portraits and the Seasons. Her
Figure
Drawing sketches are done in charcoal and
oil Pastel.
Carol (Denn) Buddell lives and
works from her studio in historical Bath,
England
with her husband, British tennis
writer, James Buddell.
